Confidence and Competency

I was most confident in a chaotic emergency department environment. I enjoyed the fast-paced, challenging cases that came through those doors. I felt comfortable with my competency after spending so many years in ICU settings. In order to help ppl I had to be at the top of my game. I loved learning and there was always more to know. I loved precepting young nurses because I wanted them to share my love of nursing. I believe most of them did. I still love a challenging case. Those are the ones that keep a thirst for knowledge at the forefront of a very rewarding career. I have laughed and cried through some very long, grueling shifts along with friends I've had for decades. I wouldn't change a thing. To this day, I still love a hospital environment...that whole vibe. I feel so at home! Strength means competency, courage, compassion and confidence...all rolled into one. Best career decision I've ever made!

  1. It's great that you felt so confident in such a busy, chaotic environment! Not everyone would, so you were clearly well suited to your job! (I spent 4 hours on Wednesday in the ER with my parents--my mom is OK, but sigh...--and I was so impressed with the calm and helpfulness of everyone there.) I love your definition of strength.
