I couldn’t sleep. I spent half the night staring at my phone trying to figure out what happened with missing people. Apparently the police don’t do anything at all. The family is supposed to do all the work of calling friends, hospitals.
But it feels strange, like Nick isn’t telling me the whole story. Not that the twins ever did tell me that much about what was going on with their parents. There was something odd about Nick saying he was concerned and scared, yet didn’t seem as broken as he should be.
I tried to picture Annette suddenly disappearing. Even though we fought all the time, I knew I’d be devastated, because deep down she did care about me.
I grabbed my phone and typed in Daniel’s name, then Mr. Norris’ name, Christopher Norris, then Mrs. Norris. What was her maiden name again? Carter?
None of these names were particularly unique so searching yielded dozens of possible people. I narrowed the range via location and started to get somewhere.
I knew that Daniel had social media accounts that he never used, or at least never posted on. The last time he posted on any of them was last summer: a photo of Somersby Lake at dawn. As for any sign of what he was up to in Buffalo there was almost nothing. He didn’t seem to belong to any clubs or do sports. There was a brief mention of him attending some sort of Robotics engineering seminar, which sounded totally up his alley. It made me smile to think of him geeking out for a second, then angry all over again. Was Nick doing this right now? He probably had access to Daniel’s bank account, his phone, everything. Then again, Daniel had access to Nick’s accounts, that’s how he tricked me in the first place.
Why would Daniel lure me to Nick’s? This is what I kept wondering. If he wanted to blow up at me he could’ve just done it without pretending to be Nick. The only explanation was that he wasn’t sure what Nick and I were up to and he wanted to talk to Nick first and then maybe talk to me.
Did he disappear because of me?
I didn’t want to flatter myself. The more likely reason was that he wanted to hurt Nick, and there was nothing like disappearing to make Nick worry. And maybe Daniel also wanted to hurt his father as well.
But did that mean that Daniel was fine? Just hiding out somewhere, waiting until everyone was wracked with guilt? That didn’t seem like Daniel, plus why would he hurt his overly sensitive mother in this way? Something didn’t add up, and so the next option was that Daniel had disappeared against his will, either by accident or by someone else’s will. And if it was someone else then who?
